Hardness conversion

Type a hardness value and pick the scale: Toolhelix gives you the other scales and the approximate tensile strength, for steels, interpolating the SAE J417 / ASTM E140 table. The full chart is below.

Values for steels, from SAE J417 / ASTM E140. Conversions between scales are always approximate: for acceptance, the test made with the required method is what counts.

Hardness scales

How accurate the conversion is

The scales measure different things, so conversion is always approximate: the table holds for carbon and alloy steels, not for austenitic stainless steels, cast irons or non-ferrous metals. Tensile strength derived from hardness is a ballpark figure. If a drawing asks for 58 HRC, acceptance is tested in HRC.

Values in brackets

In the chart, values in brackets are outside the normal range of the scale: for example HB above 59 HRC or HRB above 24 HRC. They are given for reference, but in those ranges another scale is used.

Frequently asked questions

How many HB is 30 HRC?

About 286 HB and 302 HV, with an approximate tensile strength of 950 MPa.

What is 60 HRC in HV?

About 697 HV.

Does the conversion hold for stainless steel?

No: the SAE J417 / ASTM E140 table is for non-austenitic steels. Austenitic stainless and non-ferrous metals need their own tables.

Can I get tensile strength from hardness?

Only roughly, for steels: for a reliable value you need a tensile test.
